Valérie Jouve was born in Saint-Étienne in 1964 and now lives and works in Paris. She graduated from the National Superior School of Photography in Arles and tirelessly roams towns and cities to capture images of their inhabitants. Jouve was influenced by documentary photography and she photographs situations, landscapes and characters. She questions our habits of perception, creating a dialogue between the human body and the city. Winner of the 2013 Prix Niépce des Gens d’Image prize and crowned Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2011), a prestigious French order, Jouve’s work has been exhibited in France (Paris, Arles, Lyon) and abroad (Geneva, La Coruña, Stockholm). Her work features in a number of public collections (in the regional contemporary art funds of Alsace, Aquitaine and Île-de-France French regions, in the Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland and the Stedeljikmuseum in Amsterdam).
